January 29, Friday, 9:50 AM, Washington, DC

The snow storm continued throughout the night and drifts were slowing traffic. Less than half of the conference participants were physically able to arrive at the Central Hearing Facility in the Hart Senate Office Building. Dr. Bellhaven was weighing the decision to cancel the Friday session when someone yelled, Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays this commission from the swift completion of its appointed duty. The audience laughed and Bellhaven decided to continue. For those who missed the meeting, they could catch up over the weekend by accessing the archive.

Lawrence began his presentation by observing the only thing holding back a local run on the banks, the grocery stores, and the gas stations was the storm. There were stories in the news about empty ATMs and long lines at the fuel pumps in Los Angeles. The weather on the East Coast may have bought them a few days delay at most. Lawrence spoke for the next hour in detail about ongoing rehabilitation and societal reconstruction. At Angela’s request, he concluded with a few remarks about her favorite subject, religion, which was not covered earlier in the week. He offered the speculation that a failure to provide a context for sex reversal would weaken the credibility of traditional religious institutions and lead to their possible demise as a cornerstone of the social order.

Dr. Bellhaven thanked Lawrence for his contribution and provided a final sub-committee listing with their chairpersons and topics, along with the schedule to commence on Monday. Rather than stop for lunch, he recommended the participants retreat back to their homes and hotels and ride out the storm. The weather was expected to dump several feet of snow on the DC area over the weekend. Helen approached Lawrence as they were packing up their papers and pads.

“Lawrence, I need a drink, maybe two. And, yes…before lunch.”

“I don’t know Helen. I hate to drink on an empty stomach.”

“What about cheesecake?”

“What about it?”

“In the bar? Back at the hotel? They have cheesecake? Listen, I know all about that midnight snack routine you and Angela have. She says you’re both addicted. I understand you slink downstairs as if you’re going to get caught in some heinous act of guilty pleasure.”

“All right, all right. It’s a milk product. It, um, helps me sleep.”

“Of course it does, Lawrence. Why else would you have to sneak around?”

“Well, I…uh…I mean we—”

“Never mind, I’m messing with you. Let’s get back to the Ritz while we still can. I’m buying.”

“That’s the best offer I’ve had all week.”
